Shopping in and around Greenwood Indiana

Shopping in and around Greenwood Indiana

Greenwood is well-known all over the metro Indianapolis area for its great shopping.  The Highway 31 corridor through Greenwood was smartly developed, and because of that, is still very successful.  You are not going to see any run-down malls here.  We take our shopping seriously and people come from all over to shop here for the convenience of everything being close together.

Spin through this post to get the lay of the land.  This is an overview of the entire southside.  But pay closer attention to our local shop owners.  We especially love them and want to make sure you know how special they are!

Shopping on the southside

Mall

When I mention Greenwood as the hub, it is because it has the most concentration of shopping and restaurants that we all love.  The Greenwood Park Mall is in the center of it all.

The mall is anchored by five large department stores:  Macy’s, JCPenney, Sears, Von Maur, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.  It also has four anchor restaurants, including Cheesecake Factory, Abblebee’s, Kumo Japanese Steakhouse, TGI Friday’s and B.J.’s Brewhouse, in addition to a large food court.

Some of the stores we can’t live without are Barnes & Noble, American Eagle Outfitters, LensCrafters, Old Navy, Finish Line, Express, White House Black Market, Aeropostale, Loft, Justice, Build-a-Bear Workshop, Chico’s, Gymboree, Forever 21, Payless shoes and…STARBUCKS!  The Greenwood Mall is bustling.  This is not one of the failing malls you see in other cities.  We love our mall here, and it is in a great location with the stores we love!

Chain Stores

Within a couple miles of the mall, you will find every type of chain store and restaurant you could need.  We have a Babies R’ US, Joann Fabrics, Bed, Bath & Beyond, DSW, The Christmas Tree Store, Marshalls, Home Goods, Five Below, Big Lots, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Old Time Pottery, Office Depot, Half Price Books, Men’s Wearhouse, TJ Maxx, Walmart, Verizon, David’s Bridal, Tuesday Morning, Buy Buy Baby, Kohl’s, Best Buy, Lane Bryant, Lowe’s, Party City, Burlington Coat Factory and multiple furniture and pet stores.

Although everyone does their grocery shopping as close as possible to their home, the Greenwood shopping area has two specialty grocers for upscale eaters:  Fresh Thyme and Earth Fare.  We are all hoping for a Whole Foods soon, but meanwhile the closest one is downtown, about 20 minutes north of the Greenwood Mall.  We would also settle for a Trader Joe’s, but currently the northside of Indy is hoarding all of those locations!

Beyond the Greenwood hub, you are going to find your big grocery stores, box stores and a chain store of this or that tucked into all of our communities.

  • Franklin has a shopping hub including a Super Kroger, Kohl’s, Walmart, Ross and Big Lots.
  • Off I-65 and Southport Road is a shopping hub including Home Depot, Target, Meijer and Kohl’s.
  • Mooresville/Decatur Township share the Heartland Crossing shopping hub, which includes Menards, Meijer and Walmart.
  • Center Grove has a shopping hub along State Road 135 that includes Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Menards, Meijer and Kroger.

Local Stores

You are going to be able to get most of what you need very close to you.   But these local shops on the Southside are my family’s favorites…you will want to seek these out for special items and great hometown customer service!

  • Sophia’s Bridal, Tux & Prom – my friend Jessica owns this shop, and if you are in need of formal-wear of any kind, you need to make a stop at this beautiful store in downtown Southport!
  • Dottie Couture Boutique – This locally-owned boutique started here and has two other Indy locations as well as a thriving online business.  They update their site DAILY with new merchandise so you always know when to go in to grab something you see that you love!
  • Outdoorsman – since 1976 this store has been serving sportsman in the Greenwood area.  They specialize in everything you need for a hunting day, but you will find everything from fishing to soccer balls here.
  • Trinkets & Threads – my friend Amy owns 2 stores on the southside, one in Center Grove off 135 and the other in Franklin.  You will find all manner of handmade gifts and jewelry, home decor and beautifully painted furniture!
  • ByTavi – this fair trade boutique in downtown Franklin is a product of mission work in Cambodia.  The ministry there trains and employs women who are in extreme poverty or in danger of being sold for sex trafficking.  The women make clothing and accessories that are sold in the ByTavi shop, and profits go back to fund the ministry.
  • Stouts Footware – the Greenwood store is one of only 4 locations in the Indy area.  Stouts is the oldest shoe store in the United States, open in downtown Indianapolis since 1886.
  • Coffey Connection – best screenprinter in the area!  Stop in the store to browse their school spiritwear, or choose the garment you like and have them custom-screenprint a design while you wait!
  • Teresa’s Hallmark – family-owned since 1989, you’ll find familiar Hallmark products, plus a huge store full of unique gifts you won’t find anywhere else.  This is a gem in the Center Grove area off of State Road 135.
  • J&J RC Hobbies (no website, just go!) – this RC hobby shop in Mooresville is a must for remote-control car enthusiasts.  Although it won’t appeal to a lot of you, I mention it because it is one of our favorites since my son is very into his RC Cars!
  • RaeLynn’s Boutique – RaeLynn’s is the largest prom and social occasion retailer in Indy!
